When people think about the late Queen Elizabeth, they often remember her adorable waddling corgis.
In honor of the queen’s 98th birthday, a quaint English town has paid tribute to the former head of the church and her loyal companions – her corgis. On April 21, the town of Oakham, England unveiled a remarkable statue created by talented sculptor Hywel Pratley from London. The statue features a stunning bronze replica of the queen adorned in her regal attire, while her treasured dogs gracefully rest at the base.
Hundreds of people gathered to commemorate the unveiling of the statue, as mentioned in an Instagram post by the Rutland County Council. The former reigning monarch, who passed away at the age of 96 in 2022, was honored during the event. With a remarkable 70-year reign, the queen held the title of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. The county council proudly stated that this statue serves as the “first permanent memorial” dedicated to the queen.
Dr. Sarah Furness, the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, took the initiative to commission the installation of the statue following the passing of the queen. The county council revealed that the funding for the construction of the statue was made possible through generous contributions from local businesses and the public. Additionally, the design of the statue includes imagery of corgi dogs, which were created by local children.
In her speech during the ceremony, Furness emphasized Queen Elizabeth’s warmth, stating, “What stands out about Queen Elizabeth is her genuine affection. By highlighting her fondness for dogs, we reveal her compassionate nature,” according to The New York Times.
