A Texas inmate who escaped from the Huntsville Unit yesterday was captured later that day in Calallen. Jesus Villarreal, 39, was found missing from the facility earlier, leading to a state-wide manhunt.
Villarreal, serving a 63-year sentence for violent crimes including aggravated robbery and assault, will face additional charges following his brief evasion, according to FOX 26 Houston.
Authorities suspected Villarreal had stolen a maroon Chevrolet Malibu from a nearby convenience store. He was eventually apprehended in Calallen, a town in Texas, after being reported missing from prison earlier that morning.
Villarreal’s criminal record includes four counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated assault from Cameron County, and a 2015 charge for possession of a deadly weapon in prison, as CBS Austin reported.
The search ended when Villarreal was found and returned to custody. During the investigation, Melissa Lozano was arrested for allegedly obstructing Villarreal’s capture. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice praised the cooperation among law enforcement agencies and the Office of the Inspector General for their role in this incident. Villarreal now faces felony escape charges.
