Texas Makes History as No. 1 Overall Seed in 2024 NCAA Softball Tournament
In a historic moment for their program, the Texas Longhorns have been awarded the No. 1 overall seed in the 2024 NCAA softball tournament. This is the first time in history that Texas has achieved this prestigious honor.
Despite Oklahoma’s incredible success in the past three Women’s College World Series championships, it is Texas that has been recognized as the top seed for this year’s tournament. This announcement comes as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Texas softball team.
The Longhorns have consistently showcased their talent throughout the season, and their impressive performance has not gone unnoticed. Their commitment to excellence has paid off, and now they have the opportunity to compete for the ultimate college softball title.
As the No. 1 overall seed, Texas will undoubtedly face tough competition from other top-ranked teams in the tournament. However, with their determination and skill, the Longhorns have a strong chance of making a deep run and potentially claiming their first-ever national championship.
This historic achievement for Texas softball serves as a reminder of the ever-evolving landscape of college sports. It shows that any team, regardless of their previous accolades, has the potential to rise to the top and make history.
The NCAA softball tournament promises to be a thrilling event, filled with intense matchups and unforgettable moments. As the No. 1 overall seed, Texas will be the team to beat, and all eyes will be on them as they embark on their quest for championship glory.
The Oklahoma Sooners (49-6) emerged victorious over the Texas Longhorns with a 5-1 win on Saturday night, securing their ninth Big 12 tournament title. However, it was the Texas team (47-7) who clinched the Big 12 regular-season crown in their last year as a conference member. Their impressive performance included a series triumph over Oklahoma in early April.
Oklahoma has secured the second seed in the tournament, while Tennessee, the regular-season champion of the SEC, has been granted the third overall seed. Following them is Florida, the winner of the SEC tournament title, who has been given the fourth seed.
The top eight teams in the rankings are No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Missouri, and No. 8 Stanford. These teams will have the opportunity to host super regionals if they are able to advance from the opening round next weekend.
Texas finished the regular season on a high note, winning 16 consecutive games. This impressive streak began with two victories over Oklahoma. However, the Sooners made a strong late push to secure the top seed for the fifth consecutive year. In the Big 12 tournament title game, left-handed pitcher Kelly Maxwell of Oklahoma showcased her skills by shutting down Texas’ formidable lineup. Maxwell recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits over 5โ innings.
The committee ultimately placed a higher value on the Longhorns’ overall body of work.
During Sunday’s selection show, selection committee chair Kurt McGuffin emphasized that Texas consistently held the No. 1 seed. McGuffin further highlighted the Longhorns’ impressive record of 16 wins against top-25 opponents as a significant factor in the committee’s decision-making process.
Reese Atwood, the leader of Texas, has been exceptional this season, topping the nation with an impressive 86 RBIs. Not only that, she boasts a remarkable batting average of .427 and has already smashed 22 home runs.
The Longhorns hold the top spot in the nation with a batting average of .383, closely followed by the Sooners at .367. It is evident that Texas and Oklahoma are the clear frontrunners, as pointed out by McGuffin.
In its regional, Texas will be hosting Siena, as well as Northwestern and Saint Francis (Pa.).
The regional in Oklahoma will feature teams from Cleveland State, Oregon, and Boston.
Tennessee is set to take on Dayton, Virginia, and Miami (Ohio), a team that currently holds the record for the most home runs in the nation with 157.
The top 16 seeds for the tournament include LSU at No. 9, Duke at No. 10, Georgia at No. 11, Arkansas at No. 12, Louisiana at No. 13, Alabama at No. 14, Florida State at No. 15, and Texas A&M at No. 16. Texas A&M finished third in the SEC standings.
Last year, six teams out of the top 16 seeds – Oklahoma, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Alabama, and defending national runner-up Florida State – successfully made it to the Women’s College World Series (WCWS).
The SEC led the pack with half of the top 16 seeds, excluding Texas and Oklahoma, who will be joining the conference in the upcoming season.
ESPN’s selection show revealed that BYU, Louisville, Texas Tech, and Wichita State were the unfortunate teams that were left out of the tournament.
The regional tournaments are scheduled to start this Friday, followed by the super regionals from May 23-26. The highly anticipated Women’s College World Series will kick off on May 30 in Oklahoma City, and the thrilling finals will take place from June 5-7.
