The Kremlin has issued a warning, expressing concerns that American backing for Ukraine may lead to a prolonged and misguided endeavor, and urging the U.S. not to obstruct its invasion of the country. This comes as Congress is on the verge of approving a $60 billion aid package.
After months of negotiations, an aid deal has been reached to provide support for Ukraine. The support for Ukraine has been wavering among American conservatives, especially as the Russian military continues to make gains after two years of fighting.
According to a statement made by Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, the United States’ increasing involvement in the hybrid war against Russia is predicted to result in a significant and embarrassing failure for Washington, similar to what was experienced in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
The House of Representatives approved a comprehensive foreign aid spending bill on Saturday, allocating a total of $95 billion to support various countries including Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The measure is anticipated to pass through the Senate smoothly, with President Biden expressing his support for the bill.
Ukrainian leaders and American military experts, including CIA Director William Burns, have been appealing to Congress to provide funding for Ukraine aid for several months. This call for assistance has become increasingly urgent due to the advances made by the Russian military. In fact, Burns himself recently issued a warning, highlighting the critical situation faced by Ukrainian soldiers, who are running out of arms and lack the necessary resources to defend against Russia independently.
“With the help of military assistance, both practically and psychologically, Ukrainians have the capability to defend themselves until 2024 and challenge Putin’s arrogant belief that time is in his favor,” remarked Burns on Thursday.
According to the expert, if the Ukrainians do not receive additional support, the situation could become much worse. He warns that there is a genuine risk of them losing on the battlefield by the end of 2024. Furthermore, he emphasizes that this could potentially give Putin the power to dictate the terms of a political resolution.
The conflict in Ukraine differs from those in Vietnam and Afghanistan as the U.S. and NATO allies have chosen not to deploy their own troops to the region.
