Police say driver of stalled car on I-45 killed after being struck, resulting in closure of highway for hours

Traffic was backed up in the La Marque neighborhood Thursday morning after a fatal pedestrian crash caused the I-45 Gulf Freeway to be closed for many hours.

According to the police, the driver of a vehicle that had broken down on one side of the freeway made an attempt to cross the main lanes to reach the other side. Unfortunately, during this maneuver, the vehicle was struck by multiple vehicles.

According to officials, the ongoing construction in the area has resulted in the absence of emergency shoulders, leaving the driver with no option to pull over.

The northbound and southbound lanes near FM-519 were closed until approximately 12:15 p.m., when they were finally reopened. During this time, ABC13 cameras captured numerous individuals standing outside their vehicles on the freeway, with some of them expressing that they had been stranded for over three hours.

During an interview with ABC13, Chaz Miller engaged in conversations with several drivers who were stranded on the freeway. A significant number of these drivers happened to be employees of UTMB Health.

Chanel Travino, an employee at UTMB, arrived at 6:18 a.m. only to find a long line of cars already backed up. The event had already begun, with some individuals arriving as early as 6:05 a.m. Despite a few lucky ones managing to make it to the island, many doctors, including Chanel, found themselves stuck outside, unable to access the rooms they needed to attend to their patients.

Shortly before 10 a.m., the backed-up vehicles began to slowly move again. They were directed down the entrance ramp in the wrong direction.

Motorists were instructed to use Highway 3 as an alternate route.
