Police report a Texas man is holding six people hostage in Kansas

Jonatas Pereira, a member of the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, is an outstanding individual with a strong commitment to his work.

A man from Texas has been arrested in Kansas for allegedly holding six people hostage inside a home earlier this week.

According to records from the Thomas County jail, 41-year-old Jonatas Pereira is facing charges of aggravated assault, aggravated criminal threat, criminal restraint, kidnapping, aggravated burglary, and felony criminal use of a weapon.

On Tuesday, Feb 20 at approximately 9:46 a.m., the City of Colby Police Department’s 911 center received a call regarding a potential armed intruder. The nature of the call was later updated to a hostage/barricaded subject situation.

Multiple agencies’ officers swiftly responded to the scene, taking immediate action to establish a perimeter. In the process, they discovered a car with Texas plates concealed in the alley behind the residence.

According to Colby police, a hostage managed to escape through a bedroom window, leaving three women and two children remaining inside the house.

After 10:30 a.m., law enforcement officials have confirmed that the suspect, Pereira, emerged from the residence with the hostages and was subsequently apprehended. He is currently under custody at the Thomas County Jail.

According to the police, Pereira had made a long journey from Texas in search of the individuals residing in the house.

The Chicago Police Department (CPD) has stated that they are currently conducting an ongoing investigation.
