Six individuals sustained injuries, with one person in critical condition, following a brawl that erupted outside a funeral home in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, according to authorities.
Multiple reports of a fight and stabbing at a funeral home in downtown Salt Lake City were received by the police around 1:30 p.m. MT, authorities stated.
According to Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Brent Weisberg, a “very chaotic scene” unfolded when a fight erupted.
According to a recent update from the police, one individual who was initially thought to have been shot is currently in critical condition. However, doctors have been unable to determine the exact cause of their injury. The person is currently undergoing surgery and their condition remains unstable.
According to Weisberg, multiple witnesses dialed 911 to report a vehicle that may have been involved in the incident. The vehicle was seen leaving the funeral home at a high speed.
Police said they stopped a vehicle that matched the description several blocks away from the funeral home. According to the police, two occupants of the vehicle were taken to nearby hospitals with minor injuries but have since been discharged. The police clarified that the injuries were not caused by stabbing or shooting incidents.
Weisberg said that a third occupant was detained for questioning.
According to Weisberg, the authorities discovered a firearm inside the vehicle. He mentioned that the police are currently in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the vehicle to retrieve the weapon.
According to Weisberg, the incident took place outside the funeral home during an event that had a considerable number of attendees. It is believed that all six injured individuals were present at the event.
According to Weisberg, the detectives are currently investigating the fight to identify the individuals involved. Describing the investigation as “very complex,” they are diligently working to gather all the necessary information.
“We have yet to ascertain the motive behind this incident, nor have we been able to identify the number of individuals involved as suspects or victims,” stated Weisberg.
According to police, no arrests have been made as of Tuesday evening. Additionally, authorities have stated that they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with the incident.
The investigation is being aided by the Violent Crime and Robbery Squad and Gang Unit of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Detectives.
Unfortunately, there is a lack of information regarding the individuals who were injured in the incident.
According to the police, there is no current threat to the community.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown expressed in a statement that incidents like this are extremely uncommon in their city. He acknowledged the swift efforts of their detectives in uncovering the motive behind this incident. Chief Brown also expressed relief in the preliminary findings, which suggest that this was not a random attack.
