One year after his death, an Atlanta adolescent is remembered for saving children from drowning on a Florida beach

Two Metro Atlanta families commemorated the anniversary of the tragic drowning incident that claimed the life of 16-year-old Bryce Brooks during spring break last year.

This spring should have been a time of celebration for Bryce Brooks and his loved ones, as he was set to graduate from Maynard Jackson High School. However, instead of celebrating his accomplishments, they gathered together for a balloon release to commemorate his tragically shortened life.

Bryce’s father, Alfred “Shivy” Brooks, described it as a phone call that parents never want to receive.

Spring Break 2023 marked a tragic incident that unfolded a year ago in Pensacola, Florida. It was during this time that 16-year-old Bryce Brooks bravely dashed into the water to aid struggling children. Accompanying him was family friend Charles “Chuck” Johnson, who also selflessly ventured into the treacherous waters. Unfortunately, neither Bryce nor Chuck emerged from the ordeal alive.

Brooks expressed deep sorrow as he shared the heartbreaking news of losing their baby to rip tides. He emphasized that rip tides often appear deceptively calm, concealing the danger lurking just beneath the surface. However, amidst the tragedy, Brooks found solace in the realization that their child had heroically sacrificed their life in an attempt to save others. This selfless act meant the world to them, adding a glimmer of comfort in their profound grief.

Crystal Brooks, Bryce’s mother, expressed that this year has been incredibly challenging for their family, and they deeply feel the absence of their beloved son.
