Maya Rudolph Performs as Beyoncé and Madonna in Opening Number of ‘SNL’ Sketch ‘Mother’

Maya Rudolph kicked off the Mother’s Day episode of “Saturday Night Live” by paying homage to all the incredible mothers out there.

Hosting the penultimate episode of the sketch show, Rudolph kicked off her monologue by acknowledging her role as a mother of four. However, cast member Bowen Yang reminded her that she is more than just a mom. He referred to her as a “mother,” a term used in queer slang to describe influential and inspiring women. He praised her for being a trailblazer and a queen who knows how to make a lasting impression.

Rudolph pretended to be surprised and replied, “Who, me, mother?” The host then proceeded to energetically dance through Studio 8H, also known as the “House of Rockefeller,” wearing a shiny bodysuit. During the dance number, they sang lyrics like “Oops, I made you dance” and referenced a movie scene where they accidentally soiled themselves. They also included lines that played on the word “mother,” such as “Who’s your favorite funtie? It’s me, come on hunty!” and “I will also turn this car around if you don’t stop hitting your sister.”

The monologue also featured appearances from cast members Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson, Chloe Fineman (and her dog), and Punkie Johnson. Punkie Johnson stepped in to deliver “a message from the gays” that “the monologue is giving body-ody-ody.” The performance ended on the main stage, which was now adorned with disco balls. Rudolph added a touch of drag aesthetics by unfurling a fan, and there were other nods to drag aesthetics, such as Thompson’s MC Infinity Decor and a panel of judges delivering verdicts of “10” and “I’m gagged.” The song alluded to popular cultural references like Madonna’s “Vogue” and Beyoncé’s “Renaissance: Part I,” which also drew inspiration from ballroom culture.
