Jonathan Majors, a talented actor whose career hit a roadblock following a conviction for domestic violence in New York, has been sentenced to domestic violence programming. The judge, after careful consideration, deemed that jail time was not necessary in this case.
According to Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Michael Gaffey, in order to complete their sentence, majors are required to attend a 52-week in-person batterers intervention program in Los Angeles. Additionally, they must continue to receive mental health counseling and maintain distance from the victim, Grace Jabbari, who is their ex-girlfriend.
Majors could have been sentenced to a maximum of 364 days in jail, but the Manhattan district attorney’s office decided against seeking jail time. Instead, prosecutor Kelli Galaway proposed that domestic violence programming, along with an order of protection against Jabbari, would be sufficient.
According to Galaway, the presumption of innocence no longer applies to the defendant. Despite the jury’s verdict, the defendant continues to deny any responsibility for his actions.
According to Jabbari’s victim impact statement, Majors still poses a threat to others.
Jabbari expressed her experience of enduring “intense physical and emotional agony” that she claims persisted “both immediately and in the months that ensued” after their altercation in March 2023.
“When I was with him, I transformed into a completely different person. I felt small, scared, and extremely vulnerable,” Jabbari passionately expressed from the podium. “He shows no remorse, takes no responsibility, and I have no doubt that he will repeat his actions in the future. Other women will become victims of his abuse.”
Majors greeted his current girlfriend, actress Meagan Good, with an affectionate embrace before settling down at the defense table in anticipation of the sentencing. Prior to the judge’s arrival, Majors found solace in reading passages from the Bible.
Defense attorney Priya Chaudhry mentioned that Majors chose not to address the court during the sentencing proceedings because of Jabbari’s civil lawsuit against him.
According to Chaudhry, this year has been the toughest for Mr. Majors. He reassures that he will wholeheartedly complete any program mandated by the court.
“We have high hopes that Mr. Majors will soon make a comeback in the film industry,” she expressed optimistically.
In December 2023, after a trial, Majors, 34, received a split verdict. He was convicted of one count of misdemeanor third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment. However, he was acquitted of two other counts of assault and aggravated harassment.
The jury’s mixed verdict indicated that they found Majors guilty of recklessly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, but not intentionally.
In March 2023, he faced charges related to a physical altercation with his girlfriend while they were in a hired SUV in Manhattan.
During the trial, Jabbari stated that she attempted to take hold of his phone after noticing a message appear that read, “I wish I was kissing you.” In court, she recounted how Majors restrained her right hand behind her back while clutching the phone in his left hand.
“In court, she described the experience as if he was forcefully twisting my arm and hand, attempting to inflict pain.”
According to the prosecutors, they presented evidence to the jurors showing that Jabbari had sustained injuries, including a fractured finger, as depicted in the photos taken by the police. These photos illustrated a cut to her ear and a finger that was bruised and swollen.
During the trial, Majors chose not to testify in his defense. However, in a sit-down interview with Linsey Davis from ABC News Live in January, his first since being convicted, he vehemently denied allegations of twisting her arm and causing any injuries.
According to the individual involved, he recalls the following events: “As she reached out to take the phone, I firmly held onto it. In response, I instinctively pulled the phone back, resulting in her forcefully coming on top of me. During this altercation, she proceeded to squeeze my face and ultimately slapped me. After that, my memory becomes hazy.”
Gaffey refused to dismiss the conviction, despite Majors’ request.
Gaffey wrote that the jury could have reasonably concluded that the Defendant caused physical injury to Ms. Jabbari recklessly.
In her civil complaint, she is seeking compensation for the physical injuries she alleges she sustained from the incident. Additionally, she accuses Majors of intentionally causing emotional distress and making false statements about her during the interview with Davis.
In response to the filing, Chaudhry stated to ABC News that Majors is currently preparing counterclaims against Jabbari.
Jonathan Majors portrayed the character of Kang in various Marvel movies and TV shows, including the popular Disney+ series “Loki.” He was all set to reprise his role as Kang in the highly anticipated film “Avengers: Kang Dynasty,” which is scheduled for release in 2026.
In 2020, his outstanding performance in the HBO series “Lovecraft Country” earned him an Emmy nomination for his lead role.
