Johnny Depp Expresses Gratitude for Being Offered Role of King Louis XV in ‘Jeanne du Barry’

Johnny Depp expressed his gratitude and disbelief at receiving the opportunity to portray French King Louis XV in his latest film “Jeanne du Barry.” During the U.K. premiere, he shared that he felt incredibly fortunate and almost surreal to have been offered such a role.

Johnny Depp was joined on stage at the Curzon theater in Mayfair by the film’s co-star and director, Maïwenn. Together, they provided a brief introduction to the film.

“I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been given the opportunity to take on this role – in a strange, almost ironic way,” he expressed during a public engagement in London. “When Maïwenn and I first discussed the possibility of me portraying Louis XV, the King of France, it immediately took me back to my roots in Kentucky, where everything is fried. It made me realize how far I’ve come from a small town and now find myself embodying the King of France.”

“I couldn’t understand her decision, and I tried to dissuade her,” he shared. “But she was determined and had the courage to include me in her cast. Despite the challenges we faced and the obstacles we encountered, I believe and hope that you’ll find it was all worth it for this young filmmaker to create a movie of such duration.”

During her speech, Maïwenn expressed her desire to create “Jeanne du Barry” since 2016. She revealed that she had been fascinated by Jeanne for a long time, emphasizing that Jeanne was a feminist ahead of her time.

The film, which marked one of Depp’s early projects following his lengthy legal dispute with his ex-wife Amber Heard, premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The audience gave Depp and the director a standing ovation that lasted for seven minutes.

The audience in London on Monday evening, including Depp’s fellow “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor Mackenzie Crook, also showed their admiration by applauding as the actor made his way to the stage.
