Indiana antislavery activist honored with new Forever stamp

A Hoosier who played a pivotal role in helping over 1,000 individuals escape slavery through the Underground Railroad is being honored with a new Forever stamp.

The Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site in Fountain City unveiled a new stamp showcasing Catharine Coffin during a special event on Thursday.

The series showcases 10 remarkable individuals who played a pivotal role in leading enslaved individuals to freedom via the Underground Railroad.

Catharine and Levi are acknowledged for their remarkable contribution in aiding over 1,000 individuals in their escape from slavery. Their home in Fountain City played a pivotal role as a vital stop on the Underground Railroad, as stated by the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

The Forever stamp series pays tribute to a group of remarkable individuals, including Frederick Douglass, Thomas Garrett, Laura Haviland, Lewis Hayden, Harriet Jacobs, William Lambert, Rev. Jermain Loguen, William Still, and Harriet Tubman.
