A former Democratic congresswoman who appeared on MSNBC seemed to share the view held by many Republicans that the U.S. has a “two-tiered” criminal justice system. However, she believes that this system actually favors former President Donald Trump, despite him currently facing 88 criminal counts.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s Ayman, Donna Edwards, a former Democratic congresswoman from Maryland, suggested that Trump is taking advantage of an unjust and “really imbalanced” justice system. Edwards made this observation in response to Ayman Mohyeldin pointing out that Trump has faced no consequences for sharing a social media image depicting President Joe Biden bound in the back of a pickup truck.
“It seems like he can do whatever he wants and get away with it without any consequences,” Mohyeldin expressed.
“It appears that the scales of justice are heavily skewed when it comes to Donald Trump,” Edwards responded. “There are actions he has taken that, if committed by any other criminal defendant, would have resulted in their immediate return to jail, with their bail being revoked.”
In 2023, Donald Trump faced a total of 91 criminal counts spread across four indictments. If found guilty and given the maximum penalty for each charge, he could potentially spend over 700 years in prison. Although three counts have been dropped in the Georgia election interference case, there have been criticisms from some on the Left regarding the former president’s use of stall tactics to delay the trials. However, it is widely recognized that a defendant facing the possibility of spending centuries behind bars is not receiving preferential treatment from the justice system.
Despite this, the former congresswoman contended that former President Trump is being let off the hook for sharing images like the one featuring President Biden in the pickup truck.
Kathy Griffin would have had a visit from the Secret Service if she had posted a pickup truck with Joe Biden, according to Edwards. However, Donald Trump seems to evade any consequences.
