Government Pays $138M to Larry Nassar Victims After Botched FBI Investigation

Victims of the disgraced former Team USA doctor, Larry Nassar, will be receiving a significant payout of $138.7 million from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The U.S. Department of Justice made an announcement on Tuesday, stating that they will be paying a significant sum to 139 victims. This decision comes as a result of the DOJ’s conclusion that the FBI did not conduct a comprehensive investigation of Nassar after receiving crucial information that could have prevented the doctor’s disturbing actions.

“In a news release, Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer stated that Lawrence Nassar had been abusing his position for decades, betraying the trust of those under his care and medical supervision while managing to avoid accountability.”

“These allegations should have been treated with utmost seriousness right from the beginning. Although these settlements cannot undo the damage caused by Nassar, our aim is to provide the victims of his crimes with the necessary support to aid their ongoing healing process.”

The FBI faces accusations of inadequate investigation into claims against Nassar that were reported to the agency in 2015 and 2016, thereby enabling the doctor to continue victimizing his targets.

The victims of Nassar’s abuse have received their third significant settlement from the DOJ since the 2016 USA Gymnastics sexual abuse scandal. The total amount of these settlements has now surpassed one billion dollars.

In 2018, MSU reached a settlement of $500 million. Fast forward a couple of years, USA Gymnastics and the USA Olympic Committee recently settled for $380 million in 2021.

Nassar, on the other hand, is currently incarcerated, and the key to his freedom has been permanently discarded.

Larry Nassar, a disgraced physician, who sexually assaulted numerous athletes, including Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney, has been sentenced to multiple years in prison in both state and Federal court. The sentences imposed on him amount to hundreds of years behind bars.

The settlement is still being finalized, and as of now, no compensation has been provided to the victims.
