Georgia man allegedly operates lawn mower on highway while consuming beer

A Georgia man was taken into custody after he was apprehended for operating a lawn mower under the influence of alcohol.

On April 30, deputies from Oconee County pulled over Willie Laguines, 64, for riding a lawn mower on the westbound lane of Highway 186, near Payne Road.

Deputies observed Laguines as he set down a black can from his mouth and veered the lawn mower off the road.

Laguines explained to the authorities that he was on the road because he was attempting to make his way back home. According to the sheriff’s office, he mentioned that he had departed from Golden Pantry.

Deputies reported that Laguines had the scent of alcohol on his breath and a bag was found beside his feet on the lawnmower.

According to the report, Laguines allegedly discarded the beer can on the side of the road. He proceeded to display the remaining cans of beer in the bag to the deputies.

According to OCSO, Laguines informed the deputies that he had driven to Golden Pantry 15 minutes prior to being pulled over. He stated that he had consumed only one beer.

Laguines pleaded with the deputies to give him a chance and mentioned that he had been in a similar situation before.

According to officials, Laguines informed deputies that he had been struck by a car in 2024 while he was riding his lawnmower on the road.

He faced arrest and was charged with DUI-alcohol (less safe), an open container, and a low-speed vehicle violation. The authorities proceeded to book him into the Oconee County Jail.
