A parents’ rights group has filed a lawsuit against the attorney general of California, alleging that their ballot initiative has been unjustly labeled with a political bias.
Parent activist group Protect Kids California has filed a lawsuit against California Attorney General Rob Bonta due to their concerns about the title and description he provided for their ballot initiative. The initiative aims to ensure that parents are informed if their children request to be treated as a different gender, it seeks to prevent transgender females from participating in female sports, and it also mandates that students participate in activities and use school facilities according to their birth genders.
Emily Rae, a senior counsel at the Liberty Justice Center, expressed that Californians deserve a fair and impartial title and summary for any ballot initiative, regardless of its perspective or content. She emphasized that Rob Bonta, as the Attorney General, has a responsibility to fulfill his duty without introducing any bias or prejudice into the matter.
PKC’s ballot initiative is leading the way in addressing the growing concerns of parents across the state regarding transgender policy in education and sports. According to PKC, their initiative is supported by 68% of California voters, including 65% of Democrats, as per the Rasmussen polling. Additionally, a Gallup poll reveals that 93% of Republicans, 67% of independents, and 48% of Democrats believe that transgender athletes should only participate in teams that correspond to their biological sex. PKC also highlights a Harvard/Harris poll that shows the same percentage of voters are against allowing minors to use puberty blockers.
Erin Friday, Esq, a member of PKC’s executive team, pointed out that Attorney General Bonta has consistently expressed his opposition to Protect Kids California’s initiative. She believes that the initiative had no chance of obtaining a fair title and summary due to Bonta’s biased stance. Additionally, Friday highlighted Bonta’s conflict of interest as he is involved as a plaintiff, defendant, and amicus in multiple lawsuits related to the same issues.
School districts all over California have implemented policies that mandate informing parents about gender changes, resulting in multiple lawsuits. Bonta has spearheaded the opposition against these recent school board regulations, publicly endorsing them through his office and submitting amicus briefs in lawsuits challenging the decisions of the school boards.
The California Secretary of State states that in order for this initiative to appear on the ballot for November 2024, it would be necessary to gather 546,651 signatures.
According to a recent poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California, an overwhelming 70% of likely California voters express their support for the Equality Act. This national bill, proposed in 2021, aims to eliminate discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in various domains such as public accommodations, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system. If enacted, the federal Equality Act would have taken precedence over any state or local laws pertaining to transgender issues.
