Fatal crash on US 61 results in one death and serious injury

One person was confirmed dead in a crash on U.S. Route 61 on Monday morning, according to Lewis County Coroner Larry Arnold.

According to crash records from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a tragic accident occurred resulting in the death of 95-year-old Roy Schutte. The records indicate that Schutte was traveling in the wrong direction, heading northbound in the southbound lane, when his vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle.

A 42-year-old female was seriously injured when Schutte’s vehicle collided with hers. For medical care, an ambulance took her right away to Blessing Hospital.

Emergency responders were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on southbound U.S. Route 61 at approximately 10 a.m.

After the accident, authorities decided to shut down the southbound section of U.S. Route 61 located under the Route P interchange in Canton, Missouri. Traffic heading south was redirected to the ramps at the Route P interchange.

The reopening took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
