Dua Lipa’s ‘SNL’ Appearance: Criticizing Gov. Noem, Analyzing Kendrick vs. Drake

Dua Lipa and the writers of ‘SNL’ didn’t give any leniency to a specific politician known for carrying guns and shooting dogs. Instead, they turned Gov. Kristi Noem into the subject of their jokes, setting the tone for the show.

During her monologue as the host and musical act on Saturday night, the singer enthusiastically mentioned her latest album “Radical Optimism.” Dua emphasized that the album title signifies the importance of maintaining a positive outlook regardless of the circumstances.

During the show, Heidi Gardner, wearing a MAGA hat, stood up and introduced herself as South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem. However, Dua interrupted her swiftly.

The punchline needs to be watched, but the fact remains that there is currently no optimism surrounding Noem. She has faced severe criticism for recounting the story of why she had to euthanize a puppy.

In her memoir, Noem discloses that she personally ended the life of the puppy, stating that it was “untrainable” and deemed “less than worthless” as a hunting dog.

Returning to Dua…she not only treated the audience to two fresh tracks but also delved into the ongoing rivalry between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. In a clever twist, she assumed the role of a local news “culture critic” who provided an insightful breakdown of the feud.

Wanda Weems, the character, is known for her lack of knowledge about “culture” and her profound insights, such as Kendrick’s description of Drake as Canadian because he hails from Toronto.

The bit may not be remembered as a classic ‘SNL’ skit, but it was saved by the white anchors imitating Drake and Kendrick and almost saying the n-word.

It’s no secret that it’s quite difficult for any parody to surpass the sheer entertainment value of a real-life epic rap battle. This past weekend, we witnessed the release of three new songs – one from Drake and two from Kendrick – further fueling the excitement.

On a positive note, Dua’s night on ‘SNL’ did feature a special guest appearance by the legendary Jerry Seinfeld. So, at least there was that highlight amidst everything else.
