Tragic Loss: College Football Player AJ Simon Passes Away Just One Week Before Realizing Pro Ball Dreams

Simon, a 25-year-old student, made the decision to transfer to the University of Albany in New York. During his time there from 2022 to 2023, he contributed as a defensive lineman for the Great Danes. The school expressed their deep regret over his departure and mentioned that Simon will be greatly missed, as stated in their social media announcement.

“According to the school, AJ was an exceptional young man and an even better teammate during his tenure at UAlbany. He served as a role model both on and off the field, becoming a pillar of the program over the last two years.”

The cause of death has not been disclosed.

According to NBC Sports, Simon recently visited New England and is eligible for next week’s NFL draft.

In December, after his time on the team came to an end, he made the announcement to enter the draft. He considers his collegiate career as a Great Dane to be a pivotal experience that greatly influenced his journey towards the NFL draft, helping him develop as both a player and an individual.

“I am incredibly excited to be the representative for the University of Albany as I embark on the next chapter of my football journey,” he expressed. “Although I feel a sense of sadness that this chapter is coming to an end, I am truly grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. With that in mind, I have made the decision to enter my name in the 2024 NFL Draft.”

In February, the Coastal Athletic Association recognized Simon as one of the student-athletes who achieved a spot on the Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. This prestigious honor is awarded to students who maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.0.

According to NBC Sports, Simon had an impressive performance on the field last season, recording 12.5 sacks and over 20 tackles.

According to a post on X, Albany head coach Greg Gattuso expressed his delight in coaching Simon for two years, describing it as a “joyous” experience.

Gattuso expressed his condolences to the Simon family and shared his love for AJ, stating that he will always hold a special place in his heart for #8.
