Caleb Williams chosen as the top pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2024 NFL draft

The Chicago Bears have officially announced Caleb Williams as their new quarterback.

The Bears made a significant move in the 2024 NFL draft by selecting Williams as their No. 1 overall pick. The anticipation surrounding the union between Williams and Chicago had been building for weeks, and it was finally made official on Thursday night in Detroit.

In 2022, Williams showcased his exceptional skills by throwing for an impressive 4,537 yards and securing a remarkable 42 touchdowns, while only surrendering five interceptions. His outstanding performance on the field earned him the prestigious Heisman Trophy, along with the AP Player of the Year and the Maxwell Award.

In the previous season, Williams showcased his impressive skills by throwing for a total of 3,633 yards, recording an impressive 30 touchdowns while only surrendering five interceptions.

The USC quarterback holds several single-season records at the university. These records include total yards (4,919 yards), most total touchdowns (52), passing yards (4,537), and touchdown passes (42).

In the NFL draft, Williams becomes the sixth quarterback chosen as the No. 1 overall pick in the last seven years.

Bears’ path to Caleb Williams

The Bears secured the coveted No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft through a major trade with the Carolina Panthers in 2023. This trade allowed the Panthers to move up and select quarterback Bryce Young at the top of the draft last year. In a subsequent move, the Bears traded their former starting quarterback, Justin Fields, to the Pittsburgh Steelers in March. This trade created an opportunity for Williams to step into the quarterback position in Chicago.

The Bears attended USC’s pro day to observe Williams in action, and the quarterback also visited Chicago in April as part of his pre-draft preparations.

Chicagoโ€™s cold history with quarterbacks

The Bears franchise has been plagued by subpar quarterback play for a long time. Throughout NFL history, Chicago stands alone as the only team that has never had a quarterback surpass the 4,000-yard mark in a single season.

The Bears have only had five quarterbacks selected to the Pro Bowl since 1951. Johnny Lujack (1951-52) and Ed Brown (1955-56) are the only Bears quarterbacks to receive multiple Pro Bowl honors.

Ryan Poles, the general manager, along with head coach Matt Eberflus and the rest of the Bears organization, are optimistic that Williams will be able to bring a change in the quarterback situation in Chicago.
