The police have successfully identified the attacker responsible for the tragic stabbing incident that claimed the lives of six individuals at a bustling shopping center in Sydney. The assailant was met with a fatal gunshot from a brave police officer.
According to New South Wales Police, it was confirmed on Sunday that the individual responsible for the attack at the Westfield Shopping Centre in Bondi Junction was Joel Cauchi, aged 40. This incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, in close proximity to the renowned Bondi Beach, located in the eastern suburbs of the city.
During a media conference on Sunday, Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke informed reporters that Cauchi, the individual responsible for the attack, was dealing with mental health issues which have not been specified. The police investigators have confirmed that this incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
According to Cooke, the profiling of the offender is still ongoing. However, it is evident to us that the individual’s mental health is a significant factor in this case.
According to the official, there is currently no information, evidence, or intelligence that indicates any specific motivation, whether ideological or otherwise, behind the incident.
The attack took place at the shopping center, which is known as one of the busiest in the country. It occurred on a warm fall afternoon, when the place was bustling with activity. The incident started at around 3:10 p.m., and the police were immediately notified.
The attack claimed the lives of six individuals, consisting of five women and one man. Their ages ranged from 20 to 55. Additionally, there are 12 individuals currently hospitalized, including a 9-month-old infant whose mother tragically lost her life in the attack.
According to Cooke, two out of the six victims were from overseas and do not have any family in Australia.
A man was captured on camera confronting the attacker inside the shopping center. In the footage, he can be seen holding a post-like object as he approaches the assailant on an escalator.
During a press briefing on Sunday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his admiration for the officer, acknowledging him as a true hero whose actions had undoubtedly saved numerous lives.
“He praised the brave inspector who fearlessly confronted danger on her own, taking immediate action to eliminate the threat to others, without considering the potential risks to herself,” he commended.

Pope Francis conveyed his deep sorrow regarding the tragic incident in Sydney, describing it as a senseless tragedy. He extended his spiritual support to all those affected and offered prayers for the deceased and injured individuals. The Pope’s message was delivered through a telegram sent by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, to Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher.
