Arizona Supreme Court affirms suspension of prosecutor who wrongly charged protesters

The Arizona Supreme Court has affirmed the two-year suspension of a former prosecutor from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. This prosecutor collaborated with the police to wrongly label protesters as gang members.

The Court confirmed the state’s presiding disciplinary judge’s decisionย to revoke April Sponsel’s law license after a lengthy trial in an order filed on September 11, 2024.

The ruling of the Arizona Supreme Court has not been accompanied by a written opinion as of yet.

MCAO terminated Sponsel’s employment in 2022, leading to an ongoing investigation by the State Bar.
