A 26-year-old man from Alabama was taken into custody on Wednesday following his indictment on federal charges related to the explosion of a bomb outside the office of the state attorney general in February.
According to a news release from the US Department of Justice, Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, a resident of Irondale, will be charged with malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device.
On February 24, authorities reported that an explosive device was detonated outside the office of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall in Montgomery. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident.
In a news release on Wednesday, Marshall expressed relief that the individual responsible for the crime had been apprehended. He emphasized that while more information will be shared in the future, it is evident that this act of violence was not a random occurrence. “My staff and I are breathing a collective sigh of relief this morning knowing that this individual has been taken off the streets,” Marshall stated.
Calvert made an appearance in court on Wednesday, where he was provided with counsel from the federal defender’s office. CNN has reached out to the federal defender’s office for comment.
“The US Attorney General, Merrick Garland, emphasized the Justice Department’s zero-tolerance policy towards acts of violence that target public servants,” stated a release on Wednesday.
According to the Justice Department, Calvert could face a prison sentence of five to 20 years if found guilty.
The US District Court for the Middle District of Alabama unsealed the case details on Wednesday.
