After avoiding inquiries about his stance on abortion for several months, former President Donald Trump has declined to support a nationwide abortion ban, asserting that he believes this matter should be left to individual states to decide. However, he refrained from specifying a particular timeframe for setting bans.
In a video message shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump expressed his belief that abortion should be left to the decision of individual states through voting or legislation. He emphasized that the laws regarding abortion should reflect the preferences and values of each state, acknowledging that there may be variations in the number of weeks allowed for abortions and the level of conservatism in different states. Trump’s stance underscores the importance of state autonomy in determining their own abortion laws.
“It all comes down to the will of the people,” stated Trump, emphasizing the significance of personal choices influenced by one’s heart, religion, or faith. He urged individuals to prioritize their families, themselves, and their children, while emphasizing the importance of making decisions that benefit both their country and themselves. Voting was highlighted as a crucial action, reinforcing the idea that ultimately, the will of the people holds great significance.
In his concluding statement, Trump emphasized the crucial point that appeared to underpin his stance: this is the strategy that will enable Republicans to secure victories in elections.
“Follow your heart on this matter, but keep in mind that winning elections is crucial for restoring our culture and saving our country, which is unfortunately experiencing a decline. Always trust your instincts, but we must prioritize victory. It is imperative that we succeed, as our nation is currently facing challenges.”
Former President, who will cast his vote on a Florida abortion referendum in November, has not disclosed his stance on a measure that aims to expand abortion access in his state and overturn existing restrictions.
After months of evading the question, former President Trump has finally made a clear statement about his position on abortion restrictions. He has previously avoided giving a direct answer on whether he supports or opposes a specific number of weeks for abortion bans.
According to him, it would be preferable to leave the discussion in the hands of individual states, as long as they maintain three exceptions: rape, incest, and the life of the mother.
According to a report by ABC News in February, President Trump has privately expressed support for a 16-week national abortion ban, with exceptions for cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is at risk. Although his campaign did not deny the report, they issued a statement stating that Trump would strive to find a middle ground on the abortion issue, a stance he has often repeated during his campaign.
During a September interview with NBC News, Trump expressed strong disapproval of Florida’s upcoming six-week ban, referring to it as a “terrible thing and a terrible mistake.”
In the past few weeks, Trump has hinted at the potential implementation of federal restrictions. He has mentioned the idea of a 15-week or 16-week ban in various media interviews. However, he maintains that he has not yet made a definitive decision on the duration of the ban. Trump has also commended himself for empowering the states to make their own decisions regarding this matter.
During an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity in February, Trump revealed, “I’m about 15 weeks into the decision-making process, and I haven’t made up my mind yet. The power has been returned to the states, where it rightfully belongs. Many states are now conducting polls among their citizens, and the results are mixed. However, a significant number of states are leaning towards a 15-week limit.”
In a video message on Monday, Trump made unfounded claims regarding Democrats advocating for late-term abortions. He emphasized that Republicans are the party that stands for life while expressing his support for IVF procedures and specific abortion exceptions, such as cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is at risk.
“We aim to simplify the process for mothers and families in their journey to have children, rather than making it more challenging,” stated Trump. “This involves providing extensive support for the accessibility of fertility treatments, such as IVF, across all states in the United States.”
In a surprising move, Trump claimed credit for the reversal of Roe v. Wade, expressing his admiration for the Supreme Court justices who supported it. He further asserted that individuals from all political backgrounds had desired its downfall.
