A Kearney Catch-A-Ride vehicle was allegedly stolen on Sunday, leading to a felony theft charge against a man from Texas.
Pedro Solis Jr., a 32-year-old individual, is facing charges of felony theft by unlawfully taking an amount exceeding $5,000. Additionally, he is also charged with one count of misdemeanor obstruction of a peace officer.
Kearney Police were notified about the theft of a Kearney Catch-A-Ride vehicle at approximately 1:15 a.m. The initial report stated that a white Cadillac vehicle had been stolen from the vicinity of the Salvation Army, located at the intersection of 17th Street and Central Avenue, according to court documents.
The taxi driver finally found the vehicle in an alley behind H&R Block, located between Second and First avenues in the 1700 block of the city.
Officers responded to the scene and discovered a man, Solis, sitting in the driver’s seat. They promptly issued verbal commands for him to exit the vehicle and repeatedly informed him of his impending arrest. To ensure compliance, the KPD deployed a police K-9 on the passenger side of the car. The officers successfully removed Solis from the vehicle and proceeded to handcuff him.
According to the taxi driver, he was approached by Solis near Gillies Bar and agreed to give him a ride. However, during the short distance they traveled, Solis started arguing with the driver and the driver became concerned that the situation might escalate into a physical altercation.
The car was stopped by the driver near the Salvation Army, and as soon as he got out, Solis swiftly slid over into the driver’s seat and drove away. This prompted the police to be contacted.
The bond is set at 10% of $20,000, and the preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 8 at 3:30 p.m.
