NICU nurses at the Cleaveland Clinic are commemorating the extraordinary and infrequent occurrence of a total solar eclipse in the most endearing manner – they are adorning the babies with special shirts and sunglasses.
On Friday, April 5, the hospital in Ohio celebrated this momentous occasion by sharing an endearing social media announcement. They delightedly presented a video reel featuring adorable pictures of newborns.
“Our little ones in the NICU are getting ready for the solar eclipse!” the hospital exclaimed. “Can you believe it? By the time the next total solar eclipse occurs in Ohio, these newborns will be 75 years old! How incredible is that? Make sure to view the eclipse safely on April 8, everyone!”

The video showcases the cute infants wearing black onesies that bear the words “Total Solar Eclipse 4.8.2024.” Some of the babies even have the iconic paper-rimmed eclipse glasses, although the nursing staff clarified that these were just for show.
According to a statement from the Cleveland Clinic, while their eye covers are not the official glasses for viewing the solar eclipse, they do provide protection for the eyes during specific therapy treatments in the NICU.
NICU Nurses Celebrate All Special Occasions
The nurses in the NICU wanted to capture the special moment of the eclipse for the parents of the babies, even though the babies themselves were too young to fully appreciate it. They understood that these memories would be treasured by the babies when they grow up.
According to PEOPLE, Dana Traci, BSN, RN, a Clinical Nurse from Cleveland Clinic Children’s NICU, expressed her excitement about the current atmosphere in Cleveland. She mentioned that since the babies in the NICU won’t have the opportunity to witness the total solar eclipse outside, they wanted to organize something unique to commemorate this historic day.
The nurses emphasized the significance of parents and families celebrating every aspect of life for the babies.
“We love to commemorate various occasions in the NICU, including milestones, holidays, and now the solar eclipse!” shared Katrina Wiedenfeld MSN, RN. “It’s incredibly heartwarming to involve the babies by dressing them up for such special events.”
