Maryland Governor Wes Moore, a Democrat, strongly criticized right-wing critics who attributed the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.
During an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Moore was questioned about his stance on DEI, which stands for “Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion.”
Republicans are attempting to attribute the bridge collapse to policies promoting workplace diversity. In a tweet, a Utah state representative who is vying for the governorship claimed, “This is the consequence of having governors who prioritize diversity over the safety and welfare of citizens.” Similarly, a Republican candidate running for Congress in Florida posted, “DEI did this.” How do you react to these statements?
“I don’t have time for nonsense! I’m fully committed,” Moore declared firmly.
Iโm making sure that we can get closure and comfort to these families. Iโm making sure that weโre going to keep our first responders safe, doing heroic work. Iโm making sure that weโre going to open up this channel and be able to get boats and ships and get our economic engine going again. Iโm making sure that weโre taking care of our people to include our first responders and families and small businesses whoโve been impacted by this. And Iโm making sure that we are going to get the Key Bridge rebuilt. I have no time for foolishness, and so Iโm not going to delve into it.
Bash inquired if the criticism towards DEI constituted racism.
“My main priority is to ensure that these families receive the comfort and closure they desperately need,” Moore emphasized. “Additionally, it is crucial to provide adequate support for our first responders and to expedite the restoration of communication channels. Equally important is the swift reconstruction of the Key Bridge. At this moment, I simply cannot afford to be distracted by anything else. My complete dedication and focus are directed towards what truly matters.”
