Florida man celebrates 90th birthday with a 90-mile bicycle ride

A 90-year-old man from Florida recently celebrated his milestone birthday by engaging in an impressive physical feat. He decided to mark the occasion by embarking on a challenging adventure: riding his bicycle for a remarkable 90 miles within a span of 24 hours. This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to his active lifestyle and unwavering determination.

“I was incredibly ill for a duration of six months. Eating became a challenging task,” revealed Tom Schoeneck during an interview with WBBH-TV. Despite his prolonged illness, the mere idea of embarking on a 90-mile journey filled him with renewed energy and excitement.”

“I can’t believe it,” exclaimed Tom Schoeneck in an interview with the television station. “I actually made it back alive!”

Schoeneck, who celebrated his 90th birthday on Jan. 25, embarked on a biking adventure from his residence in Naples in early February, just as he had done on his previous milestone birthdays. However, pedaling 60 miles on his 60th birthday was undoubtedly less challenging than covering the extra 30 miles for his 90th birthday celebration.

According to WBBH, he started his journey alone, but later his daughter, Stacy Clark, who lives nearby, joined him.

“It makes me feel good and proud of myself,” Schoeneck expressed to the television station.

48 years ago, the cyclist from Missouri, who hails from St. Joseph, embarked on his cycling journey after giving up drinking.

“I’ve been keeping up with my daily exercise routine ever since,” Schoeneck shared.

The training regimen encompassed not only cycling but also running and swimming.

He expressed that the thing that motivates him to keep going is his passion for what he does.

Tom Schoneck and his wife, Dolores, recently marked a significant milestone in their relationship. They joyfully celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Saturday, as confirmed by official Missouri online marriage records. When asked about the secret behind their enduring union, Tom humorously quipped, “The key is to do what you’re told.”

After completing a challenging 90-mile cycling journey, Schoeneck is already contemplating his next goal. According to a report by WBBH, he is now considering taking on a 91-mile ride in the coming year.

He chuckled and admitted, “I’ve given it some consideration.”
