Highway Patrol suspends trooper following arrest on March 16th

A sergeant from the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) has been suspended from the agency after being arrested earlier this month in Colleton County (WCBD).

James F. Sweatman was taken into custody by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) on March 16, as confirmed by officials from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. However, specific information regarding the nature of his arrest has not been disclosed.

Trooper Sweatman has been serving Berkeley and Charleston counties as a member of Troop 6, Post A since 1998.

Sweatman was suspended without pay on March 17, while officials investigate the matter.

The State Law Enforcement Division is currently conducting an investigation.
