Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) is confident that he can secure victory in his Senate campaign against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). According to Allred, the Texas Republican Party’s disarray provides an opportunity for Democrats to cause an upset in the Lone Star State.
In a recent interview on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” Allred expressed his belief that Texas is currently experiencing an internal civil war within the Republican Party. According to Allred, this shift is moving away from the more moderate leadership of figures like George W. Bush and Rick Perry and towards a more extreme, far-right ideology. Allred suggests that this new direction does not accurately reflect the views of the majority of Texans.
Texas GOP leaders strategically removed several incumbent politicians from office, specifically targeting those who had previously opposed them. One of their main objectives was to oust individuals who supported the impeachment of state Attorney General Ken Paxton (R). Paxton faced allegations of leveraging his position for personal and political gains. Although he was impeached, he ultimately avoided conviction.
Beto Allred, who easily secured his win in the Democratic primary last week, has been actively raising funds for his campaign against Cruz. Although he came close to surpassing Cruz’s fundraising efforts in 2023, he is currently slightly trailing behind the senator, as reported by the Federal Election Commission filings in January.
According to the Dallas congressman, the Republican party in Texas is undergoing a right-wing shift that is causing division within his opponent’s party. He believes that this shift could create an opportunity for a Democrat to win the election.
Allred criticized the actions of her opponents, stating, “They’re going way too far.” She specifically mentioned Ted Cruz as one of the leaders in this regard. However, Allred wants to make it clear that she is a different candidate and poses a unique challenge to Senator Cruz.
Former NFL player turned lawmaker, Allred, attributes his success in connecting with Texas voters to his record of bipartisanship.
As the most bipartisan member of the entire Texas delegation, I make it a priority to reach across the aisle,” he emphasized. “My track record speaks for itself – being supported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in my last two elections due to my pro-business stance. Hence, they will face challenges in trying to discredit me.”
In 2018, Cruz secured a narrow victory in his reelection bid, defeating former Rep. Beto O’Rourke with a margin of approximately 2.6 percent. Looking ahead to the 2024 race, the Cook Political Report has designated it as “likely” to be won by the Republican party. However, Democrats are actively exerting pressure on Cruz, viewing him as one of the party’s prime opportunities to potentially flip a Senate seat.
