A New York woman was arrested by the police in Westport after she was found to have stolen a check from the mail and forged a different amount before depositing it. This incident marks the third arrest in less than a week related to similar charges of mail theft and check forgery.
Kayla Rosas, a 25-year-old resident of New York City, N.Y., faced charges on February 22. The charges against her include second-degree forgery, second-degree identity theft, and second-degree criminal attempt at larceny.
On February 25 and February 27, Westport police made two additional arrests for check theft.
In April 2022, a complaint was filed regarding a stolen check from the U.S. Postal Service mailbox on Myrtle Avenue, which led to charges being filed against Rosas after a police investigation.
The individual who filed the complaint informed the authorities that the check had been altered from $250 to $4,300 prior to an attempted deposit.
According to the report, the police were able to identify Kayla Rosas as the suspect in the incident by utilizing search warrants and sharing information with other law enforcement agencies.
On February 22nd, Westport police arrested Rosas at the Westchester County Correctional Center in New York, where she was being held. She was then taken to Police Department headquarters and officially charged.
Rosas, unable to post a $50,000 bond, was held for arraignment the following day at the state Superior Court in Stamford.
