The Supreme Court is expected to release its rulings on Monday, including the much-awaited decision on whether Colorado has the authority to remove former President Donald Trump from the primary ballot.
The court’s website announced on Sunday afternoon that it is expecting rulings.
Trump is scheduled to be on the state primary ballot on Tuesday. The Colorado Supreme Court ruling that declared him disqualified because of his attempts to challenge the 2020 election results was temporarily suspended.
The U.S. Supreme Court conducted oral arguments on February 8th to determine whether Trump can be disqualified from the ballot due to his involvement in the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. According to Section 3 of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, individuals who have participated in insurrection are ineligible to hold government positions. Based on the oral arguments, it seemed likely that Trump would emerge victorious in this case.
The court’s ruling on Monday may come as a bit of a surprise to some, as the case was heard on an expedited basis and the decision is being delivered later than anticipated.
The ruling is expected to have an impact not just on the Colorado case, but also on any other attempts to remove Trump from the ballot. Currently, there have been similar rulings in two other states, namely Maine and Illinois. However, these rulings are currently on hold due to appeals from Trump’s legal team.
On Monday, the Supreme Court will issue its decisions, which is unusual as it is not a scheduled ruling day on the court calendar. Consequently, the justices will not be present in the courtroom to announce the decisions, as they typically would be.
