Wisconsin’s Republican U.S. Senator has stated that while he is not actively seeking to become the next Republican leader, he is also not ruling out the possibility.
During an interview with News Talk 1130 WISN’s Jay Weber, Sen. Ron Johnson discussed his current focus on organizing the search for a replacement for Mitch McConnell in Senate leadership come November.
“I believe it is crucial for us to adopt a more efficient and effective approach, similar to that of a well-run private sector organization, rather than the current dysfunction we witness in Congress,” expressed Johnson. “My goal is to prevent a situation where decisions are based solely on popularity or personal preferences.”
Johnson expressed his desire to hold a Republican conference meeting in order to present a clear game plan to senators and voters, ensuring that everyone understands the next steps.
“We will be holding the conference meeting in either the week of the 11th or the following week. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss and formulate a mission statement, set goals, and establish the process for electing our new leader,” Johnson emphasized. “I want us to approach this with careful consideration and avoid rushing to make decisions. There is no need to rush, as we have plenty of time.”
Mitch McConnell made the announcement on Wednesday that he will be stepping down as the minority leader following the election. Although he has not disclosed whether he plans to run for reelection in 2026.
Johnson did not outright reject the idea of becoming the leader when asked about it.
“I’ve always maintained that I don’t envy the responsibility of being their leader,” Johnson remarked. “If we secure the majority, I would be more than content serving as the chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. There is a plethora of investigations to be conducted and an abundance of oversight to be carried out, and that would actually be my preference. However, we will go through this process and observe which leaders come forward. At this point, I am spearheading this process since no one else has called the conference committee. I have been actively involved in these matters, so once again, if I can take the lead in this process, hopefully the right leader will emerge.”
