During a 16-month investigation that concluded in November 2023, it was revealed that at least 30 prison staff members in Kentucky had engaged in inappropriate relationships with inmates. Shockingly, one female employee even became pregnant by an inmate. Furthermore, an alarming discovery was made that 14 individuals were involved in smuggling drugs into the facilities. Several relationships were discovered within the prison system, involving not only prison guards but also probation officers. In one case at the Sandy Correctional Complex in Elliott County, a female corrections officer was terminated in 2022 after being observed meeting with an inmate 25 times in a short period across different prison dorm areas. The extent of these relationships even led to a probation officer becoming pregnant by a convict on parole.
In the investigation of 140 staff members, 62 individuals either resigned or were dismissed, while others received warnings or were mandated to undergo corrective training. Scott Jordan, the deputy commissioner of adult institutions, highlighted the strict measures taken to address these incidents, indicating that the significant number of cases demonstrates the efficacy of their response strategy.
