According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a Texan man has been sentenced on Wednesday for his involvement in aggravated identity theft and a scheme to smuggle firearms from Texas to Mexico.
32-year-old Leonardo Barroso, from Brownsville, has been sentenced to over nine years in prison, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Barroso received a 111-month prison sentence in relation to the charges.
According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), during the hearing, it was revealed that Barroso, who worked as a door-to-door electricity salesman, misused his customers’ personal information to buy firearms in San Antonio and Corpus Christi. The DOJ stated that Barroso acquired more than 20 firearms with the intention of smuggling them into Mexico and delivering them to cartel members.
According to federal officials, Barroso has confessed to transporting additional firearms out of the United States. He also admitted to recruiting Mexican nationals to purchase multiple firearms from Texas dealers for the purpose of smuggling them into Mexico.
