Indiana Man’s Remains Found on Wolf Creek Pass in 1991 Identified

The discovered remains were identified as Steven Kenneth Risku from Indiana. They were found on Wolf Creek Pass in Mineral County back in 1991. According to his family, his last known address was in Indianapolis, Indiana, and he would occasionally visit California. Although it remains unclear why he was in Colorado, his family described him as adventurous and someone who loved the outdoors, as stated by CBI.

In 2023, investigators submitted DNA from the remains for Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG) testing. The results of this testing were later confirmed using dental records and “other investigative tools,” as stated by CBI in its release.

Mineral County Sheriff Terry Wetherill expressed his satisfaction with the identification of Mr. Risku, deeming it a significant milestone towards offering his family the answers they seek. In a statement, Sheriff Wetherill also urged anyone with information regarding the circumstances surrounding Steven Risku’s presence at a remote location on Wolf Creek Pass to come forward. Additionally, he encouraged individuals with any further inquiries to reach out to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of Risku’s death has not been disclosed by the CBI. It is uncertain whether foul play was involved.

If you have any information about Risku, please contact the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office at 719-658-2600.
