Crews in storm-ravaged Texas are facing the challenge of restoring power amidst the presence of fallen trees and tangled limbs. Furthermore, they are bracing themselves for a potentially damaging forecast of strong winds and hail.
After the damaging storms on Tuesday, electricity has been restored to approximately 80% of the over 1 million affected homes and businesses. The powerful storms caused roofs to be torn off and trees to be uprooted, resulting in significant power outages from Dallas to Houston. Tragically, one person lost their life when a house under construction collapsed.
Repair crews from eight states are working 16-hour shifts to restore power in the Dallas area, according to utility company Oncor. However, accessing damaged areas is proving challenging due to trees and debris. Most customers can expect their power to be restored by Friday, although some outages may persist into the weekend.
Forecasters are predicting heavy rains, flash flooding, and severe weather from Thursday through Friday.
Due to the persistent power outages caused by recent storms in north Texas, the Garland Independent School District in suburban Dallas has made the decision to cancel classes for the remainder of the year.
Due to the recent weather challenges, the district has deemed it impractical for campuses to continue with school. However, the graduation ceremonies for its eight high schools will proceed as scheduled.
