The House of Representatives took a significant step on Thursday by advancing a bill to repeal a Washington, D.C. law that grants noncitizens the right to vote in local elections.
In a surprising turn of events, 52 Democrats made the decision to align themselves with Republicans on the matter, while 143 Democrats voted against it. This resulted in a final vote count of 262 in favor and 143 against.
The progressive city council passed the D.C. law in 2022, and it recently overcame a court challenge earlier this year.
Opponents of the bill from the Republican party raised concerns about the potential risks to national security if non-Americans are given the power to influence the decisions of local officials in the nation’s capital.
Republicans have also alleged that Democrats are attempting to sway the balance of power in elections by urging undocumented immigrants to register to vote – a claim that the left vehemently denies.
Illegal immigrants have stormed the US border in El Paso, causing chaos and knocking over guards. This incident is happening amidst a heated standoff over the new Texas law.
According to Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md, it would be illogical for an undocumented person to willingly disclose their identity on a voter registration document, which is a public and transparent record. He further stated that there is no evidence to suggest that any undocumented individuals have engaged in such practices. In essence, the district’s utilization of this procedure for local elections and governing purposes aligns with its historical usage, primarily for permanent residents who are actively involved in the community and on the path to becoming citizens.
Rep. August Pfluger, a Texas Republican, introduced the bill last year, highlighting the slim margins by which crucial elections have been decided in recent years. He asserted that the mere possibility of undocumented individuals voting could potentially influence the outcome of an entire race.
7.2 million undocumented individuals entered the United States during the Biden administration, a number that surpasses the population of 36 states.

House GOP leaders are intensifying their efforts to crack down on voting security ahead of the November 2024 elections.
