The Phoenix Mercury made an announcement on Monday that their center, Brittney Griner, has suffered a toe fracture on her left foot. As a result, she will be out of action for an indefinite period of time.
Griner’s condition will be reassessed in the following weeks, and any necessary updates will be provided by The Mercury.
The WNBA season kicks off on Tuesday, as Phoenix takes on defending champions Las Vegas (10 p.m. ET, ESPN2). Last season, the Mercury struggled and finished at the bottom of the league with a 9-31 record, missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2012. This year, Phoenix welcomes a new coach, Nate Tibbetts, and a new general manager, Nick U’Ren.
Despite the challenges faced by the Mercury in 2023, Griner made a strong comeback after her absence in the 2022 season due to her detainment in Russia. Last season, she showcased her skills by starting in all 31 games she played and maintaining an impressive average of 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds.
Griner, who is 33 years old, boasts an impressive 10-season tenure in the WNBA. Throughout her career, she has garnered recognition, earning a spot on the All-WNBA first or second team on six different occasions. Additionally, Griner has been honored as the Defensive Player of the Year twice and has secured a place on the All-Defensive first or second team seven times.
