An alleged gunman found dead on Sunday had fatally shot an Ohio police officer on Saturday night during what authorities described as an “ambush” while investigating a disturbance call at a home.
The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. local time in a residential neighborhood of Euclid, Ohio, which is situated about 15 miles northeast of Cleveland. According to Captain Mitchell Houser, a representative from the Euclid Police Department, the shooting took place.

The officer who was critically injured was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to Houser.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost identified the slain officer as Jacob Derbin.
During a press conference on Sunday afternoon, officials highlighted the fact that Derbin’s father currently serves as an active officer within the Euclid police force.

The search for the suspect, 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was initiated by authorities. However, police later discovered that Vaughn had been found dead from a gunshot wound on Sunday afternoon in a residence in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
It was not specified by the police whether Vaughn was killed by them or if he shot himself.
The authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting.

According to the nonprofit organization Officer Down Memorial Page, a total of 58 law enforcement officers have lost their lives while on duty this year. Out of these, 22 officers were fatally shot.
In 2023, the number of law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty was 136. This figure marks a significant decrease of almost 40% compared to the previous year, where 224 officers died.
