Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has actively encouraged individuals to relocate to Florida and escape what he perceives as oppressive conditions in Democratic-led cities and states.
After the adoption of anti-police policies by Democratic-led cities and states, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida legislature took action by introducing a grant program aimed at incentivizing police officers to relocate to Florida. The results have been impressive, as nearly 5,000 new recruits have already signed up, with 1,267 of them coming from 49 states and U.S. territories, according to the governor’s office.
Jewish students on campuses across the country, from California to New York, are facing attacks. However, the University of Florida, known for its peaceful environment, has remained free from any violence or takeovers. This was evident as the university successfully conducted 21 commencements over the last six days without a single incident.
Back in January, DeSantis took the initiative to direct Florida universities and colleges to simplify the transfer process for Jewish college students who wanted to come to Florida. This proactive step was taken long before pro-Hamas protestors gained control of campuses across the country.
According to a report by The Center Square, there has been a significant increase in antisemitism and violence against Jews in America, following the attack by Hamas terrorists on Israel on October 7. The report states that incidents of violence have risen by almost 400%. Additionally, another report highlights the growing violence on college campuses, with leaders failing to take effective measures to address the issue.
In 1997, the U.S. State Department designated Hamas, which stands for Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya (Islamic Resistance Movement), as a foreign terrorist organization.
On January 9th, Governor DeSantis took immediate action by issuing an emergency order for the State University System of Florida and the Florida College System. This order aimed at removing transfer application requirements that could potentially create obstacles for Jewish students who wished to transfer from their current colleges or universities to one in Florida. Governor DeSantis’ proactive approach demonstrates his commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their background or faith.
In October of last year, Governor DeSantis took decisive action by issuing an executive order to declare a state of emergency in Florida. One of the immediate actions taken was the rescue of stranded Americans in Israel. Remarkably, within just a few weeks, Florida successfully rescued over 700 Americans, as reported by The Center Square.
In an effort to combat hate crimes targeting Jews, the Florida legislature has enacted a series of bills to strengthen penalties. This action follows Governor DeSantis’ signing of the initial antisemitism bill during a historic visit to Jerusalem in May 2019. Furthermore, in October, the legislature convened a special session to impose further sanctions on Iran. Additionally, Florida universities have taken steps to deactivate Palestinian groups that support Hamas across all campuses. To safeguard Jewish students from hate crimes, Attorney General Ashley Moody has also called upon university police departments to provide protection.
According to DeSantis, many Jewish students are seeking alternatives and considering Florida due to the lack of protection and support from leaders in elite universities who enable antisemitic activities. He emphasized the importance of creating a safe environment for Jewish students and stated that his administration has implemented measures to combat hatred in the education system. DeSantis reiterated that Florida welcomes Jewish students and ensures that they will be treated with respect and not persecuted based on their faith.
Chancellor Ray Rodrigues and Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. have introduced waivers for first- and second-year Jewish students in the postsecondary system who fear persecution due to antisemitism. These waivers aim to assist academically eligible students in transferring to a higher education institution in Florida by removing credit hours and application window requirements.
DeSantis also called on colleges and universities to consider granting out-of-state tuition waivers to Jewish students facing financial difficulties when transferring from another state to Florida.
DeSantis urged the Biden administration to adhere to our current laws by revoking visas and promptly deporting foreign nationals who endorse Hamas. He emphasized that any foreign national who participates in protests advocating for “intifada” or rejoices in the killing of Israeli infants must be expelled from the country.
