In a remarkable display of heroism, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper went above and beyond the call of duty by assisting in the delivery of a baby on the side of the road. This was the second time in just under a month that the trooper found themselves in this extraordinary situation. The family, realizing that they wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time, turned to the trooper for help. With their quick thinking and expertise, the trooper ensured a safe delivery for the mother and child. Their selfless actions truly exemplify the dedication and compassion of our emergency responders.
On January 12, at approximately 4 a.m., the Kansas Highway Patrol received an urgent call regarding a family en route to the hospital for the birth of their baby. Unfortunately, it seemed unlikely that they would reach their destination in time.
According to KWCH, the couple who was identified as Lauren and Mike Rosales.
“The moment I informed Mike that we had to leave, I had an overwhelming sense that we wouldn’t reach our destination in time,” expressed Lauren Rosales. “Suddenly, the situation became incredibly urgent, and as soon as we got into the car, I realized that the baby was about to arrive. I knew deep down that we wouldn’t make it on time.”
According to KWCH, the hospital in Wichita was located more than an hour away from Ark City.
Master Trooper Da’Von Brame wasted no time as he arrived at the scene. Working together with the baby’s father, they successfully delivered the infant on the roadside, just off the shoulder of Interstate 35, according to authorities.
According to KWCH, Brame had a similar call in Butler County about three weeks prior.
According to the news station, Brame expressed his initial thoughts when confronted with a baby, saying, “The first thing I think is, ‘Oh man, here comes a baby. What do I need to do?'”
He emphasized the importance of ensuring the baby’s breathing, crying, and warmth until the arrival of paramedics.
“(Mike) has invited me to attend (Pierson’s) first birthday, and I am determined to be there on his special day,” Brame mentioned in an interview with KWCH. “I hope that for as long as I live, I can continue to be a part of his life, celebrating each birthday with him and keeping in touch to ensure that he is doing well.”
“It has been quite an eventful month,” Brame expressed. “I sincerely hope that this will be the end of it, but if it does happen again, I am fully prepared to handle it.”
“Mom, Dad, and KHP’s newest Junior Trooper Pierson have safely arrived at the hospital, and everyone is doing well,” stated the Kansas Highway Patrol.
