Hunter Biden is reportedly planning to take legal action against Fox News for broadcasting bribery accusations against him. These allegations originate from a discredited Russian agent, as per NBC News.
President Joe Biden’s son has become a regular presence at the right-wing media outlet, where the on-air personalities have entertained viewers with stories about Hunter’s history of drug addiction and involvement with sex workers. The network has also broadcasted allegations, made by Republican lawmakers and other individuals, suggesting that Hunter’s business ventures in Ukraine, particularly his position on the board of a state oil company, were advantageous to his father.
The arrest of an FBI informant suggests that the allegations of corruption against Hunter Biden may be based on Russian disinformation. Special counsel David Weiss, who has been investigating Biden and has charged him with gun and tax crimes, revealed in a charging document in February that the informant, Alexander Smirnov, acknowledged the involvement of Russian intelligence officials in spreading a story about Hunter Biden.
Republican lawmakers aiming to impeach President Biden previously embraced these claims, with Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., describing them as “highly credible” revelations from an FBI “whistleblower.” This followed the Republicans’ insistence for the FBI to release an internal document that outlined Smirnov’s unverified accusations.
According to Mark Geragos, the lawyer representing Hunter Biden, it is imperative that corrective measures be taken in response to the Republicans’ reliance on Smirnov and the subsequent amplification of their false claims by Fox News.
In a statement, Geragos accused Fox News of continuously targeting Hunter Biden over the past five years, turning him into a distorted figure to increase their ratings and financial profits. He believes that the recent indictment of FBI informant Smirnov has shed light on the disinformation conspiracy fueled by Fox News and supported by their paid representatives, which has ultimately been monetized by the network. Geragos intends to ensure that they are held responsible for their actions.
