Zero tolerance enforcement for expired temporary tags and plates to be implemented by Independence police

Independence, Missouri –  The movement to tighten regulations on expired temporary tags and license plates has gained another supporter in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

In January, the Gladstone police made a strong statement by implementing a zero-tolerance policy. They took action after receiving numerous calls from drivers who expressed their concerns about the significant number of expired tags they observed on the roads.

The Independence Police Department has recently issued a warning regarding the significant rise in expired temporary tags and license plates.

In the last week of February, IPD will begin conducting vehicle stops for the purpose of issuing citations and confiscating expired tags and licenses. This approach is being implemented in response to one of the most common complaints expressed by citizens, similar to the approach taken in Gladstone.

The Missouri Department of Revenue has recently announced that it is owed more than $78 million in delinquent state, local, and penalty fees. These outstanding fees stem from the expiration of over 58,900 temporary vehicle permits throughout the state.

A bill is currently being considered in the Missouri House of Representatives to address this issue and provide assistance to police departments statewide. If approved, this state law would grant officers the authority to stop, inspect, or detain individuals for the sole purpose of verifying the validity of their temporary permit.

Police departments are already taking action, even without the potential law in effect.

In January, the metro experienced its first significant crackdown following the release of the Dept. of Revenue’s report. Within a span of eight hours, multiple Northland police departments, including Gladstone, joined forces and successfully issued 271 citations. Furthermore, they confiscated 63 temporary tags and 23 license plates as part of their efforts.

Independence could potentially witness similar outcomes within a few weeks.

In a recent Facebook post, IPD urged everyone to take responsibility and ensure that their vehicle license and insurance are up to date. They emphasized the importance of complying with these requirements before the deadline.
