According to the U.S. State Department, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a meeting with President Xi of China on Friday. This meeting took place after Blinken’s meeting with Director of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Foreign Affairs Commission and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
During his remarks, Blinken characterized the initial encounter with Wang Yi as a thorough and productive exchange.
According to Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, there were extensive and meaningful discussions between the two sides regarding both areas of disagreement and areas of collaboration in order to responsibly manage the competition between the United States and the PRC. The Secretary expressed concerns about the PRC’s support to the Russian defense industry, the significance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, the PRC’s actions in the South China Sea, and the importance of preventing further escalation in the Middle East and on the Korean Peninsula.
In the aftermath of the Woodside Summit, where President Biden and President Xi held talks, Blinken and Wang Yi engaged in discussions regarding the progress of various commitments made by the leaders. These commitments encompassed areas such as counternarcotics cooperation, military-to-military communication, dialogue on the risks and safety of artificial intelligence, as well as the facilitation of people-to-people exchanges.
Blinken made it clear that the United States will persistently defend our interests and values, as well as those of our allies and partners, particularly when it comes to human rights and economic matters.
