Dylan Beard stands out as a unique individual among Olympic athletes.
Beard, a hurdler, is currently training to secure a spot on the United States Olympic team for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Interestingly, alongside his rigorous training schedule, Beard also works full-time at the deli counter of a Walmart.
Surprisingly, Beard claimed victory in the 60-meter hurdles during the Millrose Games held in February.
“I approached the situation with a calm and relaxed mindset, knowing that I had nothing to lose and everything to gain,” he shared during an interview with “TODAY” on April 26.
After his impressive performance in the race, he secured the third spot on the list of the world’s fastest hurdlers. As a result, he earned himself a place at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, which will be held in Eugene, Oregon in June. Following his outstanding achievement at the Millrose Games, Beard went back to his usual training routine.
After flying home, he wasted no time getting back into his routine. The very next day, he was hitting the gym, getting back to his weight training regimen. He didn’t stop there, though. He was also back on the field, practicing his skills and honing his craft. And just like that, he seamlessly transitioned back into his work schedule, ready to take on whatever challenges came his way.
Beard, an unsponsored athlete, is determined to fund his journey to Paris through his own skill and earnings. He is currently training at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Reuben McCoy, Beard’s coach, can’t help but express his admiration when he discusses the talented athlete.
“He has an unmatched work ethic, and his character truly reflects the kind of person he is,” he remarked.
According to his manager at Walmart, David Davis, Beard is truly the embodiment of a remarkable individual.
According to him, Dylan’s work ethic is truly exceptional. He consistently delivers outstanding customer service and consistently goes above and beyond, much like he does on the track.
Beard, who graduated from Howard University, obtained a master’s degree in public health. He aspires to utilize this qualification in counseling at-risk youth. Whether he is on the track or working at Walmart, Beard is committed to giving his best effort.
“I take pride in my work and understand that my actions reflect not just on Walmart, but on myself and many others,” he expressed.
“Beard couldn’t believe it when Craig Melvin, co-anchor of “TODAY,” surprised him with a generous $20,000 check from Walmart. The money was intended to provide support to Beard’s friends and family as he pursues his journey to the Olympic trials. It was an incredible gesture that left Beard speechless.”
“I am truly grateful, extremely grateful. It was completely unexpected, and I am genuinely thankful,” he expressed.
