The cause of death for O.J. Simpson, the disgraced former NFL star, has been officially revealed.
According to his attorney Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson, who gained infamy for being acquitted of murder in 1995 in relation to the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman, passed away due to prostate cancer.
The sad news of his passing came on April 10th, when he was 76 years old. His family took to social media to share the news with the world.
In May 2023, Simpson made a revelation about his ongoing battle with cancer. However, he expressed optimism in online posts, indicating that he had overcome the disease. Recently, Mr. Lavergne, the spokesperson, shared with TMZ that he obtained a copy of Simpson’s death certificate. As a result, the cause of death has been confirmed.
According to Simpson’s lawyer, despite his condition, Simpson had been โawake, alert, and relaxed” in the days leading up to his death. During one of the last visits, Simpson was found on the couch, enjoying a beer and watching TV.
“He’s the one who usually keeps me informed about current events… so we were just getting up to speed on the latest news,” he explained.
Around a week later, on April 5th, a doctor informed Mr. LaVergne that Simpson was in the process of transitioning. During Mr. LaVergne’s last visit, Simpson’s strength had diminished to the point where he could only muster the energy to request water and decide between watching a golf tournament or a tennis match on television.
Simpson’s family announced the death of Simpson through a heartfelt social media post on April 11th. They shared that he bravely fought cancer but ultimately succumbed to it. The family kindly requested privacy and grace during this difficult time.
Simpson’s family held a small service to honor his memory after his remains were cremated. The event was attended by close family members. Mr. Lavergne, who was also present, shared with The Daily Mail that the former NFL star had enjoyed a “fantastic” last few years.
According to Mr. LaVergne, OJ Simpson wouldn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him. He would openly state that he had a great and happy life, despite experiencing challenges and difficulties. In fact, his last seven years were particularly wonderful. Therefore, he wouldn’t want anyone to pity him.
“He expressed a desire to witness his grandchildren grow a little older, although he ultimately found contentment in his final days.”
Simpson gained widespread attention when he was acquitted of the criminal charges accusing him of stabbing Brown and Goldman to death in Los Angeles in 1994. This high-profile case captivated millions of viewers who followed the proceedings on television and dubbed it the “trial of the century.”
In 1997, a separate California civil court jury held the former football player responsible for the deaths and ordered him to compensate the victims’ families with $33.5 million. However, Mr. LaVergne admitted that Simpson passed away without fully satisfying this judgment.
In 2008, Simpson was sentenced to nine years in prison for his involvement in an armed robbery at a Las Vegas casino hotel in 2007. During the incident, he had encountered two collectables dealers.
After serving his time, he regained his freedom in October 2017, and his parole conditions were finally lifted in 2021.
Simpson, prior to his encounters with the law, had an illustrious career as a record-breaking running back in the NFL. He later ventured into the world of acting, sports commentary, and even became a prominent figure in television advertising.
