One of the contenders vying to be Donald Trump’s choice for Vice President has confessed to having shot a pet puppy that she had strong negative feelings towards.
In a recent account, Kristi Noem shared a story about her dog, Cricket, whom she characterized as “untrainable” and “less than worthless.” She also recounted a regrettable decision to euthanize a goat from her family’s ownership due to its aggressive and hostile behavior.
Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota is considered a top candidate to be President Trump’s running mate for the upcoming November election.
The news of her confession about killing animals evoked strong public backlash on Friday, with many expressing outrage and labeling her as “sick and twisted” and “trash”.
Anecdotes from her upcoming book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,” have been obtained ahead of its US publication next month, as reported by The Guardian.
According to the report, Ms. Noem, a former congresswoman and current governor of South Dakota, shares the story of Cricket’s death in her book as a way to demonstrate the challenges and complexities of life, both on a personal and political level. She emphasizes the importance of facing difficult and unpleasant situations head-on.
The governor recounts taking the puppy on a pheasant hunt alongside other dogs, aiming to instruct her on proper behavior. Unfortunately, the animal became overwhelmed with excitement, causing the birds to flee in fear.
In her book, Ms. Noem wrote a check to compensate the owners of the chickens who were in tears, and she also assisted them in getting rid of the deceased poultry. She describes the dog as being “filled with happiness” throughout the entire ordeal.
“I despised that dog,” writes Ms. Noem, expressing her frustration with Cricket’s behavior. According to her, Cricket was untrainable, posing a threat to anyone she encountered, and lacked value as a hunting dog. Ms. Noem reflects, “In that instant, it became clear to me that I had to euthanize her.”
She then recounts how she took her gun and brought the dog to a gravel pit to be put down. “It wasn’t a pleasant task,” she writes, as reported by the outlet, “but it was necessary.”
Ms. Noem then remembers making the decision to euthanize a male goat that was known to be aggressive and unpleasant. She vividly describes the uncastrated animal as emitting a foul and repulsive odor, with a musky and rancid scent. The goat would frequently chase and knock down her children, causing concern for their safety.
According to her account, she admits to initially missing her target when she fired her weapon. Consequently, she had to go back to her truck to retrieve another round of ammunition in order to successfully complete the task.
Despite the media reports about the claims, Ms. Noem appeared unfazed and even reinforced her stance on Friday while promoting the book.
“We are passionate about animals, but sometimes difficult decisions must be made on a farm. Regrettably, we recently had to euthanize three horses that had been part of our family for 25 years,” she shared on X.

Former White House deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews expressed her condemnation of Kristi Noem after learning about the incident involving the puppy. Initially, Matthews thought that one of the vice presidential contenders’ teams had discovered damaging information about Noem. However, she soon realized that Noem herself had written about the incident in her book.
“I can’t understand why someone would feel the need to boast about this, unless they have a disturbing mindset.”
Rick Wilson, a member of The Lincoln Project, expressed his disdain for Kristi Noem by stating, “Kristi Noem is trash.”
In all my years of working with hunting and bird dogs, I have never had to put down a dog for being too aggressive or having excessive prey drive. It is crucial to introduce puppies to birds and bird scent gradually and with patience. The incident of the puppy being killed was not due to the dog’s nature but rather the owner’s negligence in properly training the dog for bird hunting.
“Although not all dogs are suited for fieldwork, the vast majority of them can be trained or find a new home. I currently have a dog who was never meant for fieldwork, but I didn’t give up on her. She’s now enjoying her time sleeping on the couch.”
“We must treat old dogs, injured dogs, and sick dogs with compassion and dignity, rather than resorting to shooting them and disposing of their bodies in a gravel pit.”
Colleen O’Brien, senior director of PETA, criticized Ms Noem for her lack of understanding of important values such as compromise and compassion, according to a statement shared with The Independent.
According to Ms OโBrien, many Americans have a strong affection for their dogs. In light of this, she believes that Governor Noem’s actions of allowing the puppy to chase after chickens and then deciding to euthanize her instead of training her or finding a suitable home, will likely be viewed negatively by the public. She goes as far as to describe the governor as a “psychotic loony” for her handling of the situation.
Governor Noem’s lack of understanding is evident when it comes to essential political principles like education, cooperation, compromise, and compassion.
