Robert George celebrated his release from prison on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone of 31 years.
In 1994, George was found guilty of manslaughter and received a life sentence. He was convicted for the fatal shooting of Mary Dale, with the possibility of parole.
In an affidavit, Dale’s mother expressed her support for George’s release, emphasizing that her daughter’s death was an accident and emphasizing that George does not pose a threat to the community.
At 85 years old, George is thrilled about the prospect of spending his remaining years in Florida, surrounded by his loved ones.
“I have a multitude of grandchildren,” George shared with CBS 42. “It is my heartfelt desire to personally meet each and every one of them.”
There are still lingering questions surrounding the reasons behind George’s lengthy prison term for manslaughter.
In 2022, George faced the possibility of parole but unfortunately, his request was denied. Don Siegelman, a former Governor of Alabama, highlighted the challenges individuals face when seeking a second chance from the state pardons and paroles board.
According to Siegelman, it is highly probable that people will reject any changes you make in your life and insist that you go back to the way things were.
According to George’s attorney, Lauren Faraino, it is essential to provide inmates with a sense of hope that their efforts towards reform can lead to their release from prison. Faraino argues that the combination of low parole rates and lengthy sentences often results in inmates losing all motivation to change their ways.
“We all share the desire to live in a safe society, and it is crucial for us to reflect on the path that will lead us there,” Faraino expressed. “In my perspective, the most meaningful reforms are the ones that facilitate personal growth and transformation for individuals within the prison system.”
After serving his time, George was finally able to reunite with his family at a cozy Hampton Inn located just down the road from the correctional facility. He attributes his ability to stay hopeful during his incarceration to his unwavering faith.
George expressed his unwavering faith in a higher power, claiming that he constantly seeks guidance from him. According to George, this divine entity has encouraged him to persevere and stay strong.
He further mentioned that there were some of his former fellow inmates who had served longer sentences than him and also deserved to be reunited with their families.
