As tornado season progresses in the United States, the Midwest and Plains are bracing for a new storm system. This system is expected to bring tornados, hail, and damaging winds. According to FOX Weather, the initial storms will impact the Plains starting on Thursday. The threat will then shift further north and east, affecting the eastern Plains and Midwest on Friday.
On Thursday, the severe weather threat will focus on and around Wichita, Kansas, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. By Friday, the threat will expand to cover more areas in the central U.S., including parts of Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. These regions are expected to experience the most severe weather, while other areas can anticipate thunderstorms and rainfall.
Residents in impacted areas will receive alerts for severe thunderstorm and tornado watches, urging them to remain vigilant and take necessary safety measures.
A more active storm season
May is expected to bring an increase in tornados and related storms, marking it as one of the busiest months during tornado season. According to Yahoo News, the period between April and June accounts for half of all tornados in the United States. This year, 2024, has seen a 10% rise in tornado reports compared to the average year, with a total of 341 reported so far, as reported by FOX Weather.
According to AccuWeather Long-range Expert Joe Lundberg, he stated, “It remains a volatile time of the year, and this volatility is expected to persist throughout the month of May.”
May is known for being the most active month for tornadoes, with an average of 275 to 300 tornadoes occurring during this time. According to AccuWeather’s prediction in March, this May is expected to have a higher-than-average tornado count.
According to Yahoo News, there is a big storm system expected to move in from the Pacific towards the end of this week and the beginning of next week. This system is forecasted to emerge over the Plains around April 26-29, and it has the potential to trigger the next significant severe weather outbreak.
